Introduction "40*5m"

The huge painting, named "40*5m", hanging in the Hotel Restaurant Atrium of the Grand Mercure Hongqiao Shanghai was created by Mr. Weiliang Zhao, the well-known Shanghai-born American artist, in a deserted steel plant of Pudong (East Side of Shanghai) in 2006.

This painting, themed “Glorious Century”, is the longest oil painting in Asia.

On Nov.23rd 2006, Zhao started this unusual painting journey with the water from the Huangpu River, the mother river of Shanghai.

To realize the gigantic size of the painting, imagine that Weiliang Zhao has consumed about half a ton of paint only for the under painting! On the parti-colored palette of the world, Weiliang Zhao mixes and mixes again the colors, knowing sooner or later that he will come up with a color which even God can’t help envying.

After one year of hard working, this unique and marvelous painting came to existence…

As the painting is placed on the Hotel Restaurant Atrium wall facing the sightseeing lift, you can not only admire the art piece as a whole, but also its numerous interesting details while the lift is elevating to the vertiginous Hotel top floor.
